In 1916 William Crohn died of pneumonia, leaving a widow with 8 small children. After his death, life was very difficult for the family and a few years later the ranch was sold to pay the mortgage. The family then moved to Plentywood, Mont.,where Nellie attempted to support the family by doing daywork. This arrangement did not work out and a decision was made to place the 3 younger boys in an orphans home. Helen went to
stay with her sister,Frances, and her family. Frances was married to a rural mail carrier who lived in the Dagmar area. During the year, William died in the home and the other two boys were returned home. Edward and Helen went to live with Ed Shermans, friends of their father. The Shermans were good to them but life was difficult and they learned to work hard. They worked before and after school and drove 5 miles each
way every day to school in Antelope by horse and buggy. The next year Helen wen to to Princeton, Minn. to live with another sister, Mary Horstman and her family. She helped in their restaurant before school, at noon, after school and week-ends.
