WHITEWOOD | Joanne Walter Grubl was called home to be with her loving daughter, Janet, and her mother and father, Fred and Mary Kenstler, in heaven on July 23, 2014.
Joanne was born January 3, 1935, in Sturgis, SD. As a child, she grew up in Mud Butte. She also resided in Tuscon, AZ, St. Onge, SD, and Sturgis to raise her family then most recently resided in Whitewood, SD.
She was involved in several community groups including VFW auxiliary, Cowbells, and the senior center. She was a devout catholic and heavily involved in her church. Joanne loved the simplicities of country life and she loved to dance. She had a love for people and had the most infectious smile. Joanne was considered to be the matriarch of her family. Joanne was a devoted mother and grandmother, her children always her first priority. She will be forever remembered for her love of family gatherings and her special talent for hosting them.
Joanne is survived by her children, Nancy, Duane (Sonja), Mary Ann (Glenn), Maureen (Mitch), Jackie, Maurice, Mark, and Daniel. She is also survived by 34 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; and siblings, brothers, Maurice and Kevin, and sisters, Carol and Kathleen.
Joanne was preceded in death by her husband, Duane; her brother, Paul; and her sister, Maureen.
The viewing will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, July 28, with a rosary beginning at 7 p.m.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 29, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church with Father Timothy Castor officiating. Burial will follow at St. Aloysius Cemetery.
