Her birth parents were Christopher and Julia O'Connell Shea. When she was three years old her mother died of cancer, leaving a large family of small children. Her father asked the Murphys to care for her.

Her mother died when she was three years old so she was raised by James Henry and Rose (Collins) Murphy. She married Victor Petricka July 9, 1939 in Le Sueur County MN.
